Teak Grating A teak grating is both functional and attractive. The beauty and durability of Teak combined with the drainage and non-slip properties of a Teak Grating makes it the ultimate choice where a sure footing is a must. They can be used in your cockpit area; on gangways; bathing platforms; heads and showers, or even in your home. In fact they can be used anywhere an attractive solution for drainage and non-slip is required. K J Howells will make your Teak Grating to any shape you require and are finished and sanded ready for you to fit. They are individually made from your templates in the UK by quality craftsman, from the highest quality products. Solid naturally grown Teak is inlayed into a thicker outer frame and bonded together with West System Epoxy Resin. We only use what we believe are the best materials in the manufacture of our Teak Gratings. Cockpit, Bathing Platform and Passerelle Teak Grating For your cockpit area we offer a 22mm thick grating, inserted into a 28mm thick outer frame. A choice of single or double castle construction is available, and we are happy to advise you on which option we think is most suitable for your application. Single castle is the cheapest option. It is constructed by interlocking a flat section on top of the castle section giving the appearance of a traditional grating from above. Double castle is the traditional and more sturdy method of making Gratings, interlocking both top and bottom with the castle section. Both types of gratings are then inlayed into an outer frame to give it strength. To surround a pedestal or other deck fittings we can make the grating with a wider outer frame and then cut the shape into the frame, or if you wish, we can make the frame follow the shape of the deck fitting / Pedestal which gives a more refined look to the grating. We offer the same options for your new or replacement Bathing Platform or Passerelle. Email us a sketch ([email protected]) of the area you wish to cover, along with the dimensions and we will be happy to provide a free, no-obligation quote or please call us on 01202 665724 for further advice. Shower Gratings For your shower area, we offer gratings with smaller holes that are more comfortable under bare feet and are more in keeping with small gratings below decks. We offer an 18mm thick by 12mm wide grating that is recessed into a 25mm thick outer frame. Send us a sketch of the area you wish to cover, along with the dimensions and we will be happy to provide a free, no obligation quote. Teak Grating Kits Have you considered making your own grating? To obtain an accurate quote first send us a sketch giving as much information as possible. Try to show the layout of the deck area to be covered. Include any queries or questions you may have. If we need any further information to complete the quote we will let you know. Do we need templates? We only require templates for panels that are shaped. We recommend using either stiff cardboard or hardboard. The more accurate your templates, the less final fitting you will need to do. Do you have standard templates from which you produce the panels? Although we regularly produce many standard sets of panels, such as for a number of Moody, Westerly or Sigma vessels, we always request a fresh set of templates. This reduces your risk of slight model year changes, or user modifications made to the boat. Remember, if your templates fit like a glove, the panels will when you receive them! What happens when I accept the quote? If you decide to proceed with the deck panels we would then ask you to send through your templates as described above. Please number each template and record them on a separate sheet of paper, showing where they are in relation to each other. Write on the templates the face side and any additional information you might think relevant. How are the panels built? We will transfer all the details onto the lofting table and then create the outer border. The decking strips are then individually cut to size and laid in. The grooves are then primed using Sikaflex 290 DC Primer, prior to injecting the Sikaflex 290 DC Caulking. The panels are then left to cure for approximately one week prior to sanding. Can you produce a panel without an outer border? Sailing vessels such as the Moody’s sometime have a 6mm recess into which the decking is situated. For recessed areas the outer frame is not necessarily required as the end grain is protected by the recess, so a cost saving can be made. When requesting a quote, let us know that you may be interested in panels without an outer border, and we will be happy to provide an amended quote. What happens to my finished panels? After a final sanding, the finished panels are then either packaged for dispatch via a courier (a quote for which we will be happy to provide) or stored ready for your collection. What do you recommend for bonding down the panels? When you receive the panels, you should dry fit them first to check if any final fitting is required (remember, the more accurate you templates were, the less final trimming will be necessary). Once you are satisfied with the fit, we recommend you use Sikaflex 298 Bedding compound, with the appropriate primer to secure the panels to your deck. How do you recommend I care for my teak? Unlike GRP you will need to give a little more time to the maintenance by replacing the natural oils lost during the season. We recommend using a good quality teak oil, made from natural products; or for a near maintenance free coating we recommend using Coelan, the ultimate Teak Coating System.
